Research in my laboratory has focused on pathogenesis of infectious diseases of food producing animals. We contribute by tracing the path of an agent through the body of an animal, using in situ hybridization and immunohistochemistry. We use various strains of organisms and a variety of riboprobes to determine which genes are important and when they are functional. Many of the studies have dealt with diseases that are foreign to the U.S. and that are of great concern to animal agriculture. Collaboration with the USDA facilities at Plum Island and the Southeast Poultry Research Laboratory here in Athens has allowed us to do live animal experiments under conditions of high containment and then to work with inactivated material (fixed tissues) in our UGA laboratory. Basically, we do molecular virology/bacteriology on a tissue level.
