During mammalian development, cells must have a way to communicate with each other in order to develop and function properly. Many of the ways that cells communicate with each other use specific messengers, called growth factors, that interact with specific targets on cells, called receptors. We use mice that have defects in the genes encoding the growth factor to better understand how the growth factor functions.
